Sculptra® - Collagen Stimulation Treatment

Our clinic is an experienced centre for Sculptra treatment. Dr Xavier has performed over a thousand Sculptra treatments over the last decade and is one of only a selected number of doctors globally that has trained hundreds of other medics nationally and internationally in Sculptra treatment and he is a former member of the UK Sculptra Training Advisory Board when the product was owned by Sanofi Aventis as well as more recently Sinclair Pharma.

Dr Xavier's emphasis has always been on promoting best practice in using Scultpra for safety and excellent client care.

About Sculptra®

Sculptra® is a collagen stimulating injectable treatment that is designed to restore facial volume and contour the face. In doing so it can smooth out or soften lines and wrinkles. Sculptra® is considered to be a discreet approach to achieving a fresher, younger-looking and natural-looking appearance. Results should start to become noticeable after about 6-10 weeks.

As the natural ageing process takes its toll on us, our skin loses its full, firm, youthful appearance and becomes thinner and starts to wrinkle. If that was not bad enough, fat tissue, which also helps to fill out our faces, is lost, causing skin to sag and wrinkle further. For some people, this reduction in skin volume can make their face look thin and narrow and cruelly appear older than they actually are.

One treatment that's been around since 1999 is Sculptra, a non-invasive injectable facial enhancement therapy to smooth out wrinkles, restore facial volume and contour the face. It works by stimulating the build-up of your body's own collagen to get rid of lines and wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance but with gradual, natural looking results.

Sculptra provides an alternative option to consider instead of both traditional surgery and some less longer-lasting non-surgical treatments.

Who can benefit from Sculptra®?

Sculptra is suitable for both woman and men of different ages. It can help with deep folds around the mouth and nose, sunken cheeks, and loose skin as well as scars. Our doctor will be able to assess your suitability for the treatment.

In your late 20s:

Your collagen production slows down and then becomes dormant. This is an ideal time to start Sculptra® to keep your collagen reserves active and for skin tightening.

In your 30s and 40s:

Sculptra® is ideal for long lasting lines and wrinkles correction and enhances cheek volume.

Your 50s and onward:

Sculptra® is ideal to restore facial contours and volume and correct facial laxity and improve the jaw line and other areas.

A clinical study has shown that the improvements obtained with Sculptra have lasted for up to 2 years in many patients and recent evidence from clinicians suggest this can be longer. Treatment usually consists of 2 to 3 sessions lasting up to an hour; a few weeks apart with no 'downtime' needed like other treatments and carries no risk of muscle paralysis, which can lead to an unnatural looking facial expression.

How does it work?

Sculptra's main ingredient Poly-L-lactic acid works from deep within the skin's layers stimulating the body's own production of collagen. Poly-L-lactic acid has been used successfully in surgical procedures for more than 30 years and is gradually and naturally broken down by the body.

It is a discreet approach to achieving a rejuvenated appearance and once collagen production has been stimulated, natural looking results should become noticeable after about 6 weeks. This subtle enhancement allows you to maintain your beauty secrets as there is no dramatic, instant change but rather a gradual enhancement as your appearance is plumped up gradually from within.

The treatment has sometimes been described in the press as a being like a non-surgical 'liquid facelift' and is less traumatic than surgery though it can only be performed by a trained medical professional in a suitably equipped clinic. More than 150,000 people in over 30 countries have been treated with Sculptra.

Your Questions Answered

How many Sculptra injections are there per treatment session?

The number of injections at each of the treatment sessions will vary depending on the degree of correction required and the treatment plan determined by you together with your medical aesthetic practitioner.

Is treatment with Sculptra painful?

With any injection some pain is possible. Consultation with your medical aesthetic practitioner will explain what you may experience.

Is a skin test required before treatment with Sculptra?

No skin test is necessary. As Sculptra does not use any human or animal components, no allergy testing is needed before treatment.

How long do any side effects last?

This will vary from person to person. You should discuss any side effects with your medical aesthetic practitioner.

What should I do after each Sculptra treatment?

To help achieve the best possible results proper aftercare is necessary. Your medical aesthetic practitioner will give you specific instructions about aftercare during each injection session but the following guidelines will help you gain the most benefit from your Scupltra treatments:

1. Apply a cloth wrapped ice pack to the area for a few minutes at a time during the first 24 hours after your Sculptra treatment. Do not apply ice directly to your skin.

2. To help evenly distribute the Sculptra, after each treatment massage the area for 5 minutes, 5 times per day for 5 days (or as recommended by your medical aesthetic practitioner).

3. Avoid excessive sunlight and UV lamp exposure until any initial sweeling or redness disappears.

Can make-up be applied after my Sculpta treatments?

You should consult with your medical aesthetic practitioner to obtain specific advice about this but, normally, make up can be applied several hours after Scupltra treatments.

When should I have my next Scupltra treatment?

On average, a minimum of 3 treatment sessions are needed over the course of 4 to 6 weeks but this varies so do talk to your medical aesthetic practitioner about the Sculptra treatment plan that will be right for you.

What are the possible side effects of treatments with Sculptra?

Sculptra is made of a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid that is absorbed naturally by the body and has been used for years in dissolvable stitches.

Side effects reported include injection site pain and itching, redness, bruising, bleeding & swelling. Small bumps under the skin that can sometimes be noticeable when pressing on the treated area may also occur. Larger lumps, with or without inflammation, have also been reported. Other side effects may include the delayed development of non-visible, small bumps under the skin sometimes noticeable when pressing on the treated area.

Your medical aesthetic practitioner will give you special aftercare instructions. For optimum results it is important to massage the treatment area twice daily for one week. Inform your medical aesthetic practitioner if any side effects occur.

In various trials for Sculptra, participants most commonly reported the following side effects:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Injection site pain
  • Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Itching at the injection site

Who should not have Sculptra?

You should not use Sculptra if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. You should not be treated when you have an active skin infection or inflammation of the area to be treated or if you have a history or susceptibility to keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring.

How much does Sculptra cost?

The cost of Scupltra treatments varies depending on, amongst others, the factors below:

  • How many treatment sessions are required
  • How many vials of Sculptra your doctor uses per treatment
  • The degree of correction you and your doctor decide upon
  • Your medical aesthetic practitioner's fees
  • Any discounts or special offers
  • Where you live
Due to these factors and especially because Scultpra treatments are tailored to individual patients, cost will vary from person to person. The best way to determine your individual cost is by talking to your doctor.

How does the price of Sculptra compare with other anti-aging treatments?

Comparing the cost of facial rejuvenation options to each other can be challenging because so much depends on the desired results, the amount of product your doctor recommends, your response to the treatment, the amount of time the results last and your specific medical aesthetic practitioner’s fees.

A treatment that lasts up to 3 to 6 months may cost less up front than one that lasts much longer, yet generally this will require additional treatment sessions to maintain the effect for the same duration. You may want to consider the total cost over time.

When comparing the price of Sculptra to other injectables, it can be helpful to weigh cost against treatment duration. Of course, the best way to determine how much a treatment option will cost is to talk to your physician and discuss your needs.

Are the results from Sculptra immediate?

No. Because Sculptra targets the underlying causes of the signs of ageing, it can give you a noticeable result that emerge subtly and can last more than 2 years*. Some visible improvement can be seen within the first few weeks of treatment, but Sculptra is designed to deliver its unique effects, with an average of 2 to 3 sessions, over the course of a few months. Because the production of new collagen formation is a gradual process each additional treatment session will yield results that are more noticeable.

*Individual results and treatment sessions may vary. Sculptra clinical trial ended at 25 months.

Where is Sculptra used?

Sculptra replaces lost collagen in the middle to lower face and chin areas.

It is used to treat these three areas:-

  • Upper face; Sculptra is used to treat the temples.
  • Middle part of the face: nasolabial folds(deep lines between the nose and mouth), tear troughs, cheek augmentation, submalar volumising.
  • Lower part of the face; marionette lines, pre-jowls sulcus, mandibular line.
Sculptra is not recommended for glabella, front headlines correction and lips.

Discuss with your medical aesthetic practitioner which Sculptra treatment options are right for you.

How does Sculptra work?

Sculptra works to target the underlying causes of the signs of ageing such as collagen loss.

Sculptra is a facial injectable that works gradually in a series of treatments – an average of 3 injection sessions with an interval of 4 to 6 weeks between each session – to produce a refined, more youthful-looking appearance.

During the course of your Sculptra treatment, collagen growth is stimulated. Over time you should notice changes to your face that can last for more than 2 years*.

*Individual results and treatment sessions may vary. Sculptra clinical trial ended at 25 months.

Over 150,000 people have had Sculptra® in over 30 countries and the active ingredient (Poly-L-lactic acid) has also been used in surgical procedures for over 25 years.
